Supporting protection
efforts of the government
In
an effort to support the protection efforts of the Karnataka Forest
department, Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) in association
with Wildlife First and Global Tiger Patrol UK provided a new
4X4 patrol vehicle to the Nagarahole reserve in 1996. This was the first
private donation of a patrol vehicle to any forest department
in the entire country. Again,
with assistance from Global Tiger Patrol three 4X4 jeeps and 50
field kits to protection staff were presented to Bhadra Tiger
Reserve in 1997.

Based
on the success of these efforts, Wildlife First undertook the
task of implementing Karnataka Tiger Conservation Project (KTCP), a large tiger conservation
project initiated by WCS with funding from Save the Tiger Fund
and other donors. The spirit of voluntarism permeated through the project and kept the costs low, acheiving more conservation gains for money invested.
This
project attempted to implement a comprehensive conservation strategy
using an innovative combination of sustained tiger protection
efforts with scientific monitoring, community education, conflict
reduction and habitat consolidation through voluntary resettlements.
KTCP
demonstrated that forging critical partnerships with the government,
local conservation partners and international donors can work
effectively to change the situation on the ground in favor of
wild tigers in the Indian context.
Under the project, 15 4X4 patrol vehicles, two high speed
patrol boats, 58 wireless communication sets, 1746 field kits,
280 insurance policies for field staff, six state level and 30
local level awards for meritorious service to the tiger were provided
as an outright grant to the forest department.
