Karnataka Tiger Conservation Project (KTCP)

Karnataka Tiger Conservation Project was initiated by Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS), which aimed at obtaining a clear understanding of tiger ecology in specific contexts identifying the major threats to tigers, and then, attempt to address these threats. Wildlife First, which co-ordinated the implementation of the project, was also involved in training, conservation monitoring and community interfacing activities.

Educating media personnel about conservation problems

Wildlife First Outreach

Wildlife First Outreach envisages broadening our reach using mass communication media to mobilize public support and inspire new conservationists through effective use of printmedia, television and Internet.

Media campaigns and feature stories about wildlife conservation issues are generated to build public opinion.. Radio programs covering different thematic aspects of wildlife conservation have been produced to reach rural masses. Influential opinion makers including politicians, government officials, and community leaders are educated about conservation to garner support for wildlife.

Interaction with officials of the state forest and other government departments form part of the efforts to address wildlife conservation policy measures. Wildlife First Outreach also provides resource inputs to other wildlife NGO’s working around national parks and wildlife sanctuaries in Karnataka.

Training and Education

Wildlife First conducts training and education programs for enforcement officers, judicial officers, journalists and general public including teachers and students. Under the aegis of the Karnataka Judicial Academy, Wildlife First has conducted seven training capsules for more than 300 Judicial Magistrates, Chief Judicial Magistrates, Session Judges and Public Prosecutors. In association with the Police department, Wildlife First conducts sensitization programs for in-training and serving police officers. More than 350 officers of various ranks including a few IPS officers have participated.

Wildlife First was invited by the State Forestry College, Ministry of Environment & Forests, Coimbatore as resource persons for refresher training programs. More than 200 officers from across the country participated in four programs over a two year period.

Wildlife First continues its community education activities initiated earlier under the NAWICOED project. In 2009 awareness campaigns to prevent forest fires were conducted around BRT, Bandipur and Nagarahole Reserves.
