Karnataka Tiger Conservation Project (KTCP)

Karnataka Tiger Conservation Project was initiated by Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS), which aimed at obtaining a clear understanding of tiger ecology in specific contexts identifying the major threats to tigers, and then, attempt to address these threats.  Wildlife First, which co-ordinated the implementation of the project, was also involved in training, conservation monitoring and community interfacing activities.

Community Leadership for Tiger Conservation (CLTC)

CLTC is a continuation of the long-term conservation efforts initiated under the Karnataka Tiger Conservation Project.  It aims at site-based tiger conservation through support to local community leaders.  CLTC aims to consolidate high quality tiger habitat by reducing human-wildlife conflict through voluntary resettlement, mobilizing public support through education and exploring possibilities of land acquisitions to consolidate prime wildlife habitats.  Wildlife First provides conservation networking and policy support to the project.

Educating media personnel about conservation problems

Wildlife First Outreach

Wildlife First Outreach envisages broadening our reach using mass communication media to mobilize public support and inspire new conservationists through effective use of print, television and Internet.

Media campaigns and feature stories about wildlife conservation issues are generated to build public opinion.  Workshop for journalists of both print and visual media are conducted to sensitise media personnel on conservation problems.  Radio programs covering different thematic aspects of wildlife conservation have been produced to reach rural masses.  Influential opinion makers including politicians, government officials, artists and religious leaders are educated about conservation to garner support for wildlife.

Interaction with officials of the state forest and other government departments form part of the efforts to address wildlife conservation policy measures.  Wildlife First Outreach also provides resource inputs to other wildlife NGO’s working around national parks and wildlife sanctuaries in Karnataka.

Community Education

Wildlife First co-ordinates with Nagarahole Wildlife Conservation Education Project (NAWICOED) in imparting conservation education to rural youth, teachers, students and general public around important national parks and wildlife sanctuaries in Karnataka.  Activities includes slide talks, nature camps, contact programs, anti-forest fire campaigns, etc.  NAWICOED also publishes the bi-annual magazine ‘Nisarga’ covering major wildlife and conservation aspects.  The magazine has articles both in Kannada and English.
